Women have not been treated well by the home construction industry. I know this is the case because for the last 12 years I have taught a class on how to manage your home remodel or new construction without a general contractor. 85% of my students have been women! They have shared their home construction experiences with me and it is deplorable how they have been taken advantage of by contractors. These women described how they were forced to accept inferior materials, poor quality workmanship, arbitrary increases to the contracted cost, and threatened with liens being placed upon their property if they did not accept the shoddy work and pay the higher costs. Many of the issues that I address in the Pat Fay Method book are a direct result of these conversations.
It is true that most women do not know a lot about the process of home construction. Contractors particularly like to speak double talk to women and convince them that they need to pay for change orders (increases to the cost of the project above the contracted amount) because of some issue on the job site or in the construction documents that the female homeowner just does not know if it is true or not.
This poor construction practice ends with the Pat Fay Method. It teaches that the homeowner does not need to know everything under the sun about home construction because that is why they hire contractors. Contractors are the experts in their field and during negotiations we ensure that and it is even written into the Pat Fay Method contract.
The reason for this is because an expert in their field will not be surprised by anything in their field of construction. Therefore, there is no reason for a change order on the project unless the homeowner changes the scope of work.
This lesson and many more are found within the Pat Fay Method book. It is a professional management book written for all homeowners but it is women who have embraced it most. It teaches them that they are not powerless because now they will know how to conduct themselves, what to do, what not to do, and how to call the contractor's bluff. After all, contractors are just a tool for the homeowner. A necessary tool but only a tool never the less.
Why? Because the homeowner has the most powerful tool in all of home construction; the money. And with the money they can hire the contractors they need to do the work required to accomplish their home construction project. Yes, many contractors will not work for you if you follow the Pat Fay Method but many more will because you will pay good money for the work to make it profitable for the contractor. If a contractor tells you that they will not work according to the rules of the Pat Fay Method (which are basic construction management techniques and methods as well as plain common sense) then you will learn in the book how to respond, which is to say, 'well, thank you very much for your time. I will not be using me on my job. I'll find a different contractor who wants to earn good money on my project. Goodbye".
The Pat Fay Method empowers the woman homeowner to be in charge of their project. It teaches them that they no longer have to be treated poorly by any part of the home construction process because they will learn how to wield the power of their money, and how to respond to the many bluffs that are presented to them as 'rules of home construction' and debunk them as the poor myths they are.
The result is women in charge of their home construction projects who will no longer tolerate being charged 2 to 3 times what home remodel or new construction should cost.
